A direct flight takes you from the UK to India on one plane. From Heathrow it takes about 8 and a half to 10 and a half hours to Delhi or Mumbai.
With one stop you change planes on the way, for example with Emirates in Dubai. The journey takes longer, but you can start from UK airports with no scheduled direct flight to India, such as Manchester, and reach cities with no direct flight from the UK, such as Kolkata and Kochi.
Tell us your dates and we will price both, so you can weigh the fare against the time.
On a British passport you need a visa to visit India, unless you hold an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card. The FCDO’s entry requirements for India have the details.
British passport, no OCI card
On a British passport you can apply for an e-Visa on the Indian government’s site, indianvisaonline.gov.in, unless you are of Pakistani origin. The e-Tourist visa comes for 30 days, 1 year or 5 years, and on the 1 year and 5 year visas you can stay up to 180 days in a calendar year. Apply at least 4 days before you arrive.
With an OCI card
An OCI card is a lifelong, multiple entry visa for visiting India, so you need no other visa for a visit. Some activities, such as research, missionary work or journalism, need special permission. Since June 2026 you can also download an e-OCI, but India’s OCI site says it does not replace the physical card, so carry your OCI card and your passport.
If you are of Pakistani origin
India’s e-Visa site says people of Pakistani origin should apply for a regular visa at an Indian mission, such as the High Commission of India in London, not for an e-Visa. The FCDO says visas for people of Pakistani origin, British-Pakistani dual nationals and NICOP holders take much longer to process. If you are a British-Pakistani dual national, the FCDO says you must apply for an Indian visa on your Pakistani passport.
In the 72 hours before you land
On a British passport, with or without an OCI card, fill in India’s e-Arrival card online in the 72 hours before you land, on boi.gov.in or the Indian Visa Su-Swagatam app. It is not a visa.
Before you land
At the moment India requires every international arrival to fill in a Self-Declaration Form on the Air Suvidha portal before landing.
Valid at least 6 months after you arrive
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after you arrive, with at least 2 blank pages.
Read the FCDO travel advice for India before you book. It advises against all travel within 10km of the border with Pakistan, and to the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, apart from flying in and out of Jammu city and travel within it. It advises against all but essential travel to Manipur, including Imphal. Travelling against FCDO advice can invalidate your travel insurance, and the advice changes, so read it again before you fly.
