A direct flight takes you to the USA on one plane, with no stops.
If there is no direct flight from your UK airport to the city you want, we can price flights that change planes on the way, which take longer. If you change planes in the USA, you still need an ESTA or a visa.
Tell us your dates and we will price both, so you can weigh the fare against the time.
To enter the USA, or to change planes there, you need an approved ESTA or a US visa before you travel. Apply for an ESTA on the official ESTA site or the ESTA Mobile app.
If you cannot get an ESTA
The FCDO says you may not be able to get an ESTA if you have been arrested, even without a conviction, have a criminal record, have been refused entry to or deported from the USA, or have overstayed on an ESTA before. You cannot get one if you were in Cuba on or after 12 January 2021, and normally not if you were in Iran, Iraq, Libya, North Korea, Somalia, Sudan, Syria or Yemen on or after March 2011. If you cannot get an ESTA, you must apply for a US visa instead. The FCDO says travelling on an ESTA when you are not eligible can lead to detention and deportation.
Aged 17 or under
Anyone aged 17 or under needs their own ESTA or visa. A child travelling alone, with only one parent, or with anyone who is not their parent or legal guardian must have a letter of consent from one or both parents, preferably notarised and in English. They must also be able to show the purpose, place and length of the visit if immigration officials ask. The FCDO says that if US authorities have safeguarding concerns about a child, they can stop the child entering and take the child into their care, and the child’s return could take months.
Before you travel
The FCDO says that if your ESTA does not have the required selfie photograph, you may need to apply again, so check your ESTA account before you travel.
Valid for your whole stay
You need an e-Passport to travel on an ESTA, and your passport must be valid for the whole of your stay.
When you arrive
An ESTA or a visa does not guarantee entry, and US officers decide when you arrive. The FCDO says officials may ask to inspect your electronic devices, emails, text messages and social media activity, and that if you refuse, they can delay or deny your entry.
Read the FCDO travel advice for the USA before you book. The advice changes, so read it again before you fly.
